Duo Step Up

18 September 2014

Thacker and Ashby take Academy Manager roles.

With Tony Humes’ appointment as First Team Manager, and Richard Hall’s elevation to Assistant Manager, decisions had to be made concerning the positions they had left in the Academy set up.

Tony had been Academy Manager prior to his appointment and Richard was in charge of the U21s Development squad. John McGreal was moved up from the U18s to fill Richard’s role a few days after the managerial change at the top and now the Academy Manager position has been filled.

The cornerstone of the club philosophy is progression.

Over the past couple of years, that has been seen on the pitch with the likes of Alex Gilbey, Drey Wright and Sammie Szmodics progress from youth to first team football. And now off the pitch, it has seen the elevation of Humes, Hall and McGreal from the Academy.

That promotion from within wherever possible has continued with the Academy Manager role, with Sean Thacker and Tony Ashby jointly taking on the reins. Sean will oversee the older age groups, while Tony will be in charge of the younger groups in the system.

Both have been with the U’s for a number of years and have got to know exactly the direction the club is heading.

In fact, both have been instrumental in the club regaining the Category Two status for the Academy over the past twelve months, since the EPPP audit left us narrowly missing out last summer.

We look forward to them continuing those successes in the Academy and will report further soon on their intentions within their new positions.
