U23s Fall To First Defeat

5 September 2016

Cardiff run out winners on Monday.

Colchester United U23s fell to their first defeat of the league season as they were beaten by Cardiff City on Monday afternoon.

The U's held the Bluebirds for the first 45 minutes, but the home side showed why they had won all three of their opening fixtures with a strong second half display.

The first goal came eight minutes after the restart, as Phipps powered home a header to give City the lead.

One quickly became two as Bird smashed home a fantastic effort from distance past Dillon Barnes.

The U's were given hope when Femi Akinwande opened his account from the season from close range on 62 minutes but, just two minutes later, City made it 3-1 from the penalty spot as Phipps got his second.

Next up is a trip to Nottingham Forest on Friday.

City were not to give up their advantage and actually extended their lead with eight minutes to go, as Bird got his second as he followed up a rebound to tuck home.
