U's FITC scheme to work with Dame Kelly Holmes Trust.

A transformational programme where young people facing disadvantage will be mentored by world class athletes is set to launch in Colchester thanks to funding from the Department of Work and Pensions.

The unique 14-month programme Get on Track – delivered by national charity Dame Kelly Holmes Trust – will be delivered in Colchester in association with Colchester United Football in the Community scheme starting March 20th 2017, following its success across other parts of the UK at providing young people with the attitudes and capabilities to make positive life choices.

On Tuesday 7th March, the U's FITC team will be holding an informational session for any young people interested (between 16-25, not in education or employment) at Shrub End Community Sports Centre between 9:00am and 11:00am.

With the help of athlete mentors, local young people will learn to develop the high performing attitudes of confidence, resilience, determination, focus and motivation from the course.

The programme is being led by GB Judoka Theo Spalding-McIntosh, with support from fellow athlete mentor and former GB Olympic swimmer Kate Haywood.
About the programme

Last year, 72% of the 16 to 25 year-olds who took part in Get on Track in England and Scotland entered employment, education or training within eight months of starting the programme.

Double Gold Olympian and President of Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, Dame Kelly Holmes said: "We are delighted to be in Colchester running our flagship programme Get on Track, which will help transform the lives of so many people facing disadvantage across the city.

"We harness these and use them to transform the lives of young people who require our support and equip them with the skills needed to lead positive lives."

"It is independently established that World Class athletes have a unique set of attitudes and capabilities which has led them to reach the pinnacle of elite-level competition.

"Some of these people have never had encouragement of self-belief so it’s amazing to see how a little support goes a long way in their lives.

Former GB Judoka and Dame Kelly Holmes Trust Athlete Mentor Theo Spalding-McIntosh, added: "It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to mentor young people in Colchester who need our help most.

"Through a range of one-to-one mentoring, activity and volunteering, participants will leave with the skills and attitudes needed to make positive transformational life changes."

Double Olympic gold medallist, Dame Kelly Holmes, set up her charity in 2008, which has now reached over 300,000 young people across England and Scotland through its transformational and inspirational programmes.

Colchester United’s Football in the Community have partnered with the Trust on elements of the programme set to be delivered in March.

Tom Tayler, Community Development Officer, said: "We are delighted to be teaming up with Dame Kelly Holmes Trust to support this scheme in Colchester.

"This is another opportunity for us to deliver positive outcomes within our local community and we are excited to be getting everything underway in March."

Dame Kelly Holmes Trust has committed to support 2,400 young people facing disadvantage across Essex over the next four years through its transformational mentoring programmes led by world class athletes.
