U's Go To Hullbridge

29 September 2016

Senior Cup draw confirmed.

Colchester United will go to Essex Senior League contenders Hullbridge Sports, after the draw was made for the BBC Essex Senior Cup Third Round.
At this stage the professional Football League clubs enter the competition, as well as sides from the Vanarama National and Ryman Isthmian Leagues.

They joined the remaining sides from the Essex Senior and Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties Leagues who had battled their way through Rounds One and Two. Sports had previously won 2-0 at home to FC Clacton.

The draw was broadcast on Wednesday 28th September from BBC Essex’s Chelmsford studios and the U's will go to Hullbridge on Tuesday November 8th.

Essex's other Football League club, Southend United, will travel to a team who were one of 'the 92' themselves until this season, Dagenham & Redbridge. The Daggers have recovered well from relegation last year to keep-up the pace at the top of their new division.

Elsewhere, Concord Rangers host Chelmsford City for the fifth Senior Cup meeting between the modern National League South adversaries in six seasons!

Holders Concord, who lifted the silverware for the third successive occasion in April, have won all of the previous four encounters. They also met in the 2008/09 final when, on that occasion, Chelmsford did prevail by a 2-0 scoreline at Dagenham & Redbridge FC.

2016/17: Concord Rangers vs Chelmsford City (Third Round)
2015/16: Concord Rangers 2-0 Chelmsford City (Quarter-Finals)
2013/14: Concord Rangers 1-1 Chelmsford City (3-2 on penalties) (Fourth Round)
2012/13: Concord Rangers 3-3 Chelmsford City (6-5 on penalties) (Quarter-Finals)
2011/12: Chelmsford City 1-4 Concord Rangers (Fourth Round)

Halstead Town Manager Marc Benterman and Glenn Speller from the BBC Essex Sports Team were in the studio to assist with proceedings, pulling out the home and away clubs respectively.

Marc was itching to see who his side would be paired with after a rousing 5-0 success against Burnham Ramblers in Round Two. His reward was a home game against another Dengie side, Heybridge Swifts.

Marc reacted: "They were runners-up last year and went on a fantastic run to achieve that, so we know it’s going to be a tough ask.

"We know the Manager [Jody Brown] quite well, an ex-Halstead Town Manager, and a few of their boys there have graced our surface!

"It'll be a very exciting game. It's pleasing for us to be at home - all our cup draws we've had this year have been at home. We'd like to get a big crowd down there and give it a go.

"The Essex Senior Cup is up there with the highest of our ambitions. We've got the FA Cup, which is a fantastic competition to be in. But this one, for me, is up there with the FA Vase.

"You can draw anyone at home, which we’ve seen. We’ve got some big draws and big teams in there from the Football League and the Conference as well."

Third Round matches are due to take place on or before 12th November.
