U's Are Charged Up

Electric charger goes live at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

One of three new rapid electric vehicle charging points has gone live at Colchester United’s Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Essex County Council was awarded £150,000 from the Office of Low Emission Vehicles to install the charging points at various locations across the county.

Cllr Rodney L. Bass, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: "This is the first network of its kind the country and will help make Essex’s roads cleaner and reduce carbon emissions.

"I’m proud that Essex is leading the way in making it easier for drivers to use electric vehicles and supporting the technologies of the future.

"I believe this project will contribute to the goal of creating a nationwide network of charging points."

The other two charging points are located at the George Yard car park in Braintree and the Lord Butler Leisure Centre in Saffron Walden.

The charging point in Braintree went live at earlier this month while the charging point in Saffron Walden is due to go live in the next few days.

The chargers can re-charge a car in 20 to 30 minutes. This makes driving an electric car in Essex more practical as drivers can travel further without running out of charge.
