Lapslie and O'Donoghue offered development contracts.

"Both players have done very well at U18s level and now we want to test them more regularly next season as they push up into the U21s and work alongside the professional players more often."

"He can play in the pivot position in the three midfielders that we play, but he can also get forwards too and brings that energy through the heart of the side.

"Tom is a dynamic central midfielder who is full of energy and very good on the ball. He's the sort of player that when he plays, he makes you sit up and take notice and he is a leader in the team.

"He is strong defensively, but likes to get forward and combines well with the wide player in front of him on his side of the pitch.

"Michael is a strong and powerful left back, who has been a regular in the U18s this season and has pushed his way into the U21s set up in the second half of the season," said Tony Humes, Head of Colchester United's Academy.

And Michael and Tom have been offered their contracts a year early, as they near the end of the first year of their two year youth team scholarship.
