John Martin: 1946-2013

25 November 2013

Former winger passes away.

Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

After that, he spent time with Southport, Wigan and Formby before working for Lancashire County Council.

88 appearances later and he was given a free transfer in the summer of 1969 by Dick Graham and went on to join Workington, where he played over 200 times in league football.

He then joined the U's under the management of Neil Franklin, and was ever present in his first season, scoring in his second Colchester appearance against Bournemouth.

He started his career with Aston Villa, where he turned professional after serving his apprenticeship, making one appearance for the Midlands side.

John, who played for the U's between 1966 and 1969, passed away just over a week ago, aged 66.

The club were saddened to hear the news of the passing of former winger John Martin.
