Toby's Surprise Visit

29 July 2014

Alex pops round to see young U's fan.

Colchester United midfielder Alex Gilbey paid a surprise visit to one young U's supporter on Monday, ahead of the new season.

6-year-old Toby Bryant had made his first ever trip to watch the U's in action against Ipswich with his dad Shaun, as part of a Father's Day present.

Toby took along his new hat and scarf, bought by his grandma, but unfortunately lost his hat during his visit to the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The youngster was obviously very upset and hearing this news, the U's organised for midfielder Alex to visit Toby at his house in Eight Ash Green to deliver a replacement hat and scarf, as well as two tickets for the game against Oldham next week.

An hour of football and chatting about sports put a smile back on Toby's face and mum Nikki was delighted that she and her sons Toby and Max were able to have met Alex.

"Toby thoroughly enjoyed his surprise visit," she told the official website.

"Thank you for the match tickets, Toby and his dad will definitely be watching out for Alex on the 9th August and cheering on Colchester.

"Alex was so generous with his time and attention, he's a real credit to the club and its youth programme.

"Your visit really made his day and may well be the highlight of his Summer holiday."

"Toby couldn't wait to tell his school friends this morning that he'd played football, with a professional footballer from Colchester United, in his garden!
