Tony Moves Forward

Boss looking further up the pitch after latest addition.

The arrival of George Elokobi has further strengthened the U's defensive set-up this summer – and now Tony Humes' attention switches to further up the pitch.

George became the third defender to sign over the summer and Tony believes he's close to adding his next new signing to the squad.

Reflecting on George's arrival, he said: "I am delighted to get him on board. He's got that experience that adds a bit of know-how and leadership to the squad.

"You look at him and he's been in the game for ten years now and he still has plenty in his tank, along with plenty of enthusiasm too.

"He's a very affable character and he'll blend into the dressing room, he'll give the young lads something to look up to – and he's a good experienced pro like Chris Porter. He will lead by example and do the right things."

George follows Richard Brindley and Matthew Briggs into the squad and Tony believes he has good cover in the back four.

"You look at what we've got - a good bit of experience, a blend of youth too and cover across all positions," he said.

"The priority we needed to look at from last season was to establish a stable back four. Those three on permanent contracts means we have plenty of bodies there and we shouldn't have to go into the loan market in that area.

"My next priority is a midfielder with a bit of experience, but someone who is a good age too. We are very close to a deal there and hopefully that will be done in the early part of next week, and that will be a step closer to what we want."
