U's Flash: Gorkss Signs

7 December 2014

Latvian international pens short term contract.

Colchester United are pleased to announce the signing of hugely experienced defender Kaspars Gorkss ahead of Sunday's FA Cup tie with Peterborough United.

Kaspars flew to the UK earlier this week to pen a short term contract with the U's in time to feature in the Second Round clash.

The centre half, who turned 33 in November, has initially signed until January.

He brings with him over 450 games of league and cup experience, including three promotions in the English game.

Having won the Latvian League with Ventspils in 2006, he then got promoted with Blackpool via the League One play-offs alongside current U's midfielder David Fox in the 2006/7 campaign.

Four years later, he helped QPR to win the Championship, playing 42 times in all competitions as the R's won promotion to the Premier League.

And he repeated the feat 12 months afterwards. Having switched to Reading that summer, he again played 42 times as the Royals topped the table in the Championship.

After a loan spell with Wolves in 2012/13, he was again a regular in the Reading line-up last season, playing 27 times for the Berkshire side.

Throughout his time in England, he has been a regular in the Latvian national side. He has now played 59 times for his country, including four games this season whilst he waited to find a new club, helping a young national team through their recent matches.

Twice Latvian Footballer of the Year, Kaspars will bring a wealth of knowledge to the U's back line.

He will wear number 13 during his time with the club.
