No Brainer For George

3 July 2015

Defender delighted to be back

Returning to the club where he started his career was a 'no brainer' for defender George Elokobi.

The 29-year-old signed a two year deal on Friday and is now ready to mentor the younger players in the same way he was looked after in his first stint at the club.

"I'm really pleased to be back after a few years away," George told the official website.

"They gave me my first opportunity and I am chuffed to be back to play my part in moving the club in the right direction."

George's return to the club makes him the sole player with Layer Road connections, having started his Football League career at the club's former stadium.

And he now believes the club is in a much better place than when he left.

He added: "It is a massively different club, with much better facilities and from when the manager told me he wanted me to come and sign for the club, it was a no brainer for myself.

"I knew the club quite well anyway and knew it was a chance to come back to the same set of supporters who had backed me so well.

"I've always kept an eye on the club since leaving, and I've always had a soft spot for the U's.

"I've had a great reception from the fans whenever I've come back and now I’m back as an older player, it is time for me to help the club in the right direction.

"I have a responsibility to help the youngsters from time to time on and off the pitch. With the experience I have, it can show them how to go about their business and hopefully they can learn from myself.

"When I was young, the senior players like Wayne Brown, Kem Izzet, Sam Stockley and Kevin Watson looked after me and helped me, so it is my turn to do that now and help them build their careers."
