Defender Joins Debutants

R's defender Cole Kpekawa becomes player 818 for the U's.

Queens Park Rangers loanee Cole Kpekawa became the 818th player to make his debut for the U's in the game against Coventry City on Saturday.

Cole put in an assured performance on his senior debut at the weekend, providing plenty of attacking thrust to complement his solid defensive display at left back.

He is initially with the U's until December 20th and the game against Yeovil in just under a month's time.

Whilst looking at Cole's debut number, we looked at the others who were in the '18 club' as they made their first appearance for the U's.

And the previous two were both left backs!

The 718th player to make their debut for the U's was Matt Lockwood. He made his first appearance away at Hartlepool under the management of Geraint Williams, as the U's lost 4-2.

Next, the 618th player to pull on the blue and white was Gavin Johnson, who put in six years' fine service as he played 146 times for the U's between 1999 and 2005.

Darren Oxbrow was the U's 518th player and he scored on his debut as the U's made a winning return to the Football League at Layer Road after promotion the season before.

Player 418 was Daryl Godbold, who made his debut in a 3-3 thriller against Southend in 1984, whilst the 318th player for the U's was Mick Mahon, a member of the U's team that conquered Leeds in the FA Cup on that famous day.

Going back in the U's history, Chic Milligan was player 218 and helped the U's to a win over Southend in his first game, Ted Fenton - later U's manager - started his Colchester life as our our 118th player with defeat to Gloucester.

And our 18th player was the magnificently named Tally Day, who was part of a team that slipped to defeat against Aldershot reserves.
