The U's finished the season with a comfortable win away from home, making it the best points haul on the road in their history.

Ashley Vincent opened the scoring with his first goal for the U's on thirteen minutes and two minutes later, top scorer Mark Yeates doubled the lead.

It was the first time the U's had visited the Somerset club since that famous promotion day at the end of the 2005/6 season.

But it won't be three years until their next visit, with both sides resigned to playing League One football again next season.

However, it was a top half finish to end with for the U's as they extended their astounding away form with their eleventh away win of the campaign.

U's boss Paul Lambert shuffled his pack once more, bringing in Alan Maybury, Scott Vernon, Dean Hammond and Matt Heath. Johnnie Jackson also returned to the squad, taking his place ion the bench after missing the past few matches with hamstring trouble.

Yeovil boss Terry Tiverton only made one change in his starting line up, bringing Andrew Welsh in for the final game of the season.

Although there were no promotion or relegation issues to resolve at Huish Park, both managers had expressed their wishes to winning the three points on offer.

The game started in bright sunshine and summer temperatures and both sides were looking relaxed on the ball and were trying to create chances with neat and tidy one touch passing. Long range shots at either end but Mark Yeates found the keeper and at the other end, Dean Gerken watched one fly high over the bar.

On twelve minutes, the U's were ahead, thanks to Ashley Vincent's first for the club but keeper Weale should have done better. Forbes' poor header found Mark Yeates and the Irishman ran at the former QPR defender before playing a ball across the pitch towards Vincent.

Vincent only had one thing in his mind as he ran onto the pass and his first time shot from twenty yards out was on target but only just to Weale's right. The keeper was slow getting down and the shot went under his body to give the U's the lead.

Yeovil were looking to get back in the game with a goal of their own when an attack broke down and the U's doubled the lead. A good move ended with Alcock making strides down the right but his cross was behind his forwards and found Dean Hammond on the edge of the U's box.

Hammond found Hackney in space on the left and the ball waas quickly moved onto Vernon and then onto Yeates. A tackle came in but the ball fell to Kem Izzet, who found Yeates just as he was getting back on his feet. Two touches to turn and Yeates fired in a shot that found the bottom corner, with Weale again looking slow to get down to the shot.

Most of the rest of the half was played in the middle third of the pitch, and Gerken only had one save to make, a shot straight at him from outside the box.

Vernon was put away on the right by Yeates but Weale was on his toes this time and got to the ball first. He still didn't manage to clear and Vernon and Yeates were unable to get a shot away before the suspect keeper got back between the sticks.

Paul Lambert would have been by far the happier manager and would have been asking for more of the same from his players at the break.

The second half produced far less in the way of chances, as the U's showed great discipline to run out comfortable winners. Dean Gerken made a couple of early saves in the second period, one a comfortable catch but the other a good palm away to his left.

The home side's best chance of the game came in the fifty seventh minute, when Murtagh's shot rebounded off the post and the rebound was blocked.

Alcock then found himself in space on the far post but his volley was well saved by Gerken, who got both hands to the ball to push it to safety.

Johnnie Jackson, on as a substitute, saw his free kick fly over the bar and Hackney had shots blocked and the final whistle went with the U's in attack but failing to increase the lead.

U's: Gerken, Maybury, Baldwin, Heath, Tierney, Izzet, Hammond, Yeates, Vincent, Hackney, Vernon.

Subs: Cousins, Jackson, Coyne, Platt, Wordsworth.
