New Record For Stadium

Posted on: Mon 23 Feb 2009

Saturday's crowd against Southend United was the U's best at home for nearly 32 years.

The weekend game against the Shrimpers saw 8,651 come through the turnstiles at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

That's the U's biggest league gate since they took on Bradford at Layer Road back in May 1977, where 8,912 watched on.

Of course, capacity issues in the later years at the old stadium prevented bigger crowds, particularly in the Championship seasons.

The weekend was some 2,361 higher than the previous record at the U's new stadium and, thanks to fans collecting in advance and the procedures put in place by the club, there were no queues before Saturday's match.

It bumps the stadium average up to 4,951 and means that this season's gates are 28% up on the respective fixtures from the last time the U's were in League One.
