Young U's Go Close

Posted on: Wed 01 Apr 2009

The U's reserves fell to a narrow defeat on Wednesday afternoon against Southend United.

Joe Dunne took down a side made up of youth team players to Roots Hall and the youngsters ran their Essex opponents close.

After an evenly matched start to the game, it was the Shrimpers who took the lead as first team professional Francis Laurent opening the scoring.

The U's were to peg the opposition back, though, as first year youth team player Alex O'Leary broke into the box to drill a low effort past the Southend keeper.

Southend regained their lead five minutes later, though, as Medi Abalimba stepped onto a through ball to slot the ball home on the half hour mark.

The Shrimpers advantage stretched to two goals in the second half, as Duncan Reynolds was first to react to a loose ball in the box, following an earlier great chance for the U's Conor McCloskey.

Colchester were not to go down without a fight though, as Russell Malton waltzed into the box to put the ball past Nathan McDonald and set up a tense finish to the match.

Southend held on to record an eventful victory.
