Reserves Slip To Narrow Defeat

Posted on: Tue 28 Apr 2009

Colchester United's reserves fell to a narrow defeat on Monday night as Watford came from behind to secure a victory.

In rainy conditions, the U's started the game the brighter as Joe Dunne opted to replicate the 4-3-3 formation that had served the youth team so well in their win at the weekend.

And, just after the quarter hour mark, the visitors took the lead as a corner was thrown into the penalty area and Jordan Pavett was the first to react to stab the ball home.

The home side rallied after falling behind, and equalised just after the half hour mark.

Lewis Young was the provider, with the wide man sending over a cross into the area which Liam Henderson converted.

And the Watford comeback was complete on the stroke of half time.

This time it was the Hornets turn to score from a set piece, as Alex Cauna showed his abilities from a dead ball situation.

He stepped up and curled home a fine effort beyond Shane Cusack to make it 2-1 to the home team.

In the second half, U's scholar and recent U18s graduate Tom Bender had a great chance to pull the scores level on the hour mark but, despite time to compose himself, he was just unable to squeeze his shot home.

Watford pressed for further goals, but the young U's defence was able to keep them at bay during the rest of the game.

The U's are at home for their final reserve team game of the season, when they host Wycombe Wanderers at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

U's: Cusack, Nelson, Glowacki, Bender, Griffiths, Lartey (McCloskey), O'Sullivan (Stamp), Corcoran, Malton, Pavett, Sansford (Arnott)

Subs not used: O'Leary, Hamilton
