U's caretaker boss Joe Dunne has expressed his delight at the backing he and his side have received on an interesting week at Colchester United.

Joe oversaw the 2-1 win against Gillingham on Tuesday night and said he has been 'overwhelmed' with the support he has received so far.

"We need to keep the spirit that we showed on Tuesday when we go to Milton Keynes this weekend," he said ahead of Saturday's game.

"The players got a good result in the game in midweek and were very professional in getting themselves a result in a tough situation.

"The support I have received has been overwhelming and I will continue to do my best for the club."

Whilst Joe got off to a flying start with that win against his former side, he was keen to play down his chances of getting the manager's job on a full time basis.

At this time, he said, the key focus was to be on the players, ready for the game against MK Dons this weekend.

"There are names being banded about for the manager's position who have had plenty of experience, often at more than one club," Joe continued.

"I would probably be a bit crazy to join in with that, but I do want to manage a club at some stage in the future.

"I have always been the type of character to test myself to the limit and, if I ever fail, at least I know that I gave it my best shot.

"At the moment, it is all a bit of a whirlwind around the club and it would be easy to lose focus on the team if all we did was talk about me.

"It can affect the players and then works against you.

"We have to continue to work together - the club was galvanised on Tuesday night and it was like the old days.

"The fans are the heartbeat of the club and they're important to us, so we have to keep working hard."
