Youth Team Continue Unbeaten Record

Posted on: Tue 25 Aug 2009

REPORT BY BRIAN WALLER
With manager Joe Dunne in temporary charge of the first team away at MK Dons, the U's needed a leader for their trip to London to face the Lions, and up stepped the U16s manager and Head of Youth Tony Humes to take over.

It was to be a good day in charge for the former Ipswich Town and Wrexham defender, who recently joined the Colchester youth management team, as he led his side to their second league win of the season.

After the 2-0 success at Gillingham last week, it was more or less an unchanged team, with the only change being Tom Bender returning to the defence in place of triallist Trevor Ajim.

In a well contested first half, both teams had their opportunities, as several chances were created by the hosts and the U's.

The best opening fell to Millwall, when Bender was a touch unfortunate to have been adjudged to have committed a foul in the area with a challenge, but a penalty kick was still awarded.

However keeper Shane Cusack came to his aid by saving the spot kick.

As a result the teams went to half time with the score line still blank.

However on a pleasant sunny morning, it was Colchester who took the lead in the early stages of the second half, and again the front two strikers, as in previous games, combined well.

It was Craig Arnott who this time was the provider as his great through ball created the opening for Jordan Pavett to put the chance away.

With the game reaching the half way point in the half, a first change was made with Jordan Lartey replaced by Jordan Sanderson.

Arnott then had a couple of chances but these were easily saved by the home keeper.

Goalscorer Pavett was then replaced by Ross Gilfedder as the away team tried to put a bit more into their game with some fresh legs in the attack.

There were to be no late alarms and Colchester hung on to record their second win of the season, and hope to make it three out of three when they entertain Brighton next week.

It was another creditable display by the team who once again had three Under 16`s on their subs bench in the form of Gilfedder, and unused players Mason Stewart and Jack Folan.
