Colchester United's hunt for a new manager continues to move on apace, with the club hopeful of making an appointment by the middle of next week.

The club's board of directors met on Monday night to consider the 45 applications that came in for the post and have now narrowed that down to a long-list of twelve.

From there, a further shortlist will be decided for formal interviews over the next few days.

Chief Executive Steve Bradshaw told the official website: "The chairman will be taking time to speak to our long-list of twelve managers over the next couple of days, with a view to formal interviews with the board at the end of this week and the start of next.

"It is our intention that the manager will be in situ in time to take the team for training ahead of the game against Southampton next Saturday.

"As I have said before, we have had a fantastic range of diverse applications, from the older managers who have won accolades already, to younger players who have just finished their careers, as well as those who have managed at the top level.

"All are ambitious and we believe we can find the right man who shares our intentions to become a sustainable Championship club in the future from those that have applied."

The quest to find a new boss will be put on hold for a few hours on Saturday, as the U's host Leeds United at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

There are currently around 500 tickets available for sale for the match.
