The U's will cast their eye over striker Simon Thomas when the reserves take on Southend United on Wednesday afternoon.
Thomas recently signed for Billericay Town after his time at Crystal Palace came to a close, but is set to be given permission by his club to play for the U's in the latest totesport.com league fixture.
The game will also see Morten Knudsen play his first match for the U's, following his arrival in the January transfer window.
The Norwegian had been ineligible to play in the Essex Senior Cup, but will pull on U's colours against the Shrimpers.
And there is a strong first team representation in the squad for the game to be played at Roots Hall.
Mark Cousins, Alan Maybury, Danny Batth, David Fox, Ian Henderson, Sam Corcoran, Medy Elito and Simon Hackney all play against Steve Tilson's men.
The game down at Southend kicks off at 2pm.
Squad: Cousins, Maybury, Batth, Hamilton, Knudsen, Fox, Henderson, Corcoran, Thomas, Elito, Hackney, Cusack, Rafter, Ajim, Sanderson, Arnott
