It's that time of the year again!
Some strange and weird but wonderful mascots are limbering up to entertain local football fans at the Annual Mascot Race scheduled at Colchester United's award winning Weston Homes Community stadium on the evening of Monday February 8th.
Kick off is 7.45pm and as well as the excitement of a big crowd to watch the game, there is the added entertainment of watching a competitive race involving a host of the local area's mascots.
Don't be fooled though, these cuddly looking creatures can be just as competitive as the teams on the pitch and they are not averse to using 'tactics' to gain advantage and be victorious. Still, much hilarity is enjoyed along the way!
What's more, there is a good cause behind the race.
Colchester United have once again teamed up with Little Havens Children's Hospice to help raise much needed funds for a charity close to the club's heart.
U's Commercial Consultant John Schultz is the man behind the fundraising, encouraging and enticing both new and regular mascots to participate each year.
John said: "Many fans of both teams are aware of the vital support that Little Havens provides to families from all across Essex. Invaluable support is given to children with life limiting or life-threatening illnesses and their families.
"The whole family can be offered respite care at Little Havens, near Rayleigh and our Hospice at Home Service, is another way that they are able to help.
"Everyone at Colchester United and Southend United are right behind this very worthy cause and we hope that everyone gives generously."
In previous years, the two sets of supporters have managed to forget county rivalries and show their generosity when dropping donations into the collection buckets as they leave the ground.
And whether it's Colchester United's Eddie the Eagle, Sammy the Shrimp, the Southend mascot, or another from the colourful line-up, the two team's fans certainly get behind the half-time race when more than a dozen giant-sized characters go head-to-head on the pitch.
Tricia Norris, Community Fundraiser for Little Havens in Mid & N E Essex, said: "This event is an important local fundraiser for Little Havens, raising to date in excess of £11,000. This year there are four new mascots so the competition has got event 'hotter'!
"I can't thank John Schultz enough for his dedication and hard work each year, making this event such a successful one. Most grateful thanks also to all at the club who facilitate and support this event and to the mascots of course!
"What a great way to fundraise for local children and their families who use our Hospice At Home service and/or come to Little Havens for respite care."
