Colchester is well known for being an Army town, but Colchester United were delighted to welcome the RAF to north Essex on Tuesday afternoon.

Personnel from the RAF's National football team were invited to the Weston Homes Community Stadium when U's manager Aidy Boothroyd got a request from one of their coaching staff.

Flying Officer Kevin Thom had played for the RAF side in the past and since moving over to the coaching side, had looked at ways in which he could improve the team's performances.

And Aidy was more than willing to oblige, inviting eight coaching and playing staff along for the day.

They got to watch training, eat with the first team players and pick the brains of Aidy's coaching staff and the U's manager himself.

"The visit has been about ten times more useful than I imagined it would be and I would like to thank Aidy, his staff and everyone at Colchester United for allowing us to take up their time," he said.

"We have learnt a lot from Aidy, including decision making processes and the clarity of what he does and what he expects from his players. His enthusiasm shines though as well and that, as well as the knowledge he has, can be bought into what we are doing with our team, coaches and players alike."

That session took place at the Garrison in the town and Kevin took great delight in the fact that he was hoping to improve the RAF team in 'enemy territory'.

The RAF are the reigning Inter-Service Champions, the Army and the Navy being their opposition, and Kevin suggested that there might be something said the next time they meet their Army counterparts.

"With us gaining vital knowledge from Aidy and the coaching session at the Garrison, I'm sure that the Army side might get to hear about the visit before we meet them again.

"It will be something we will mention anyway so I'm sure that there will some comments flying about across the dugouts," he admitted.
