Colchester United's players did their bit in helping the club cement its position within the local community last season.

The U's have always been proud of their town and their community and have put in more effort than ever in working with schools, businesses and other worthy causes in Colchester and its surrounds.

During the course of the 2009/10 campaign, the U's players contributed 202 hours of their time to public and community visits.

That stunning total included many working alongside our close friends at the Colchester United Community Sports Trust and enhanced the quality of the visits of many school children locally.

Jeanette East, the Trust's Education Manager, told CU-FC.com: "The players' contributions to community events have been outstanding this season.

"They have been extremely reliable and enthusiastic across the full range of activities.

"It has been really heartwarming to see the photos and to hear the stories behind the visits.

"Because of their high profile, footballers have a unique opportunity to make a massive difference to peoples' lives merely through their presence.

Our players have taken this responsibility extremely seriously this year."

Of the players who took time to carry out community visits last season, Simon Hackney was awarded the Hospital Radio Community Player of the Year award at the Player of the Year awards in May for his outstanding efforts.

Currently away during the close season, the U's players will be out and about once again in 2010/11 - stay tuned to CU-FC.com to see what they get up to in the coming twelve months!
