U's mascot Eddie the Eagle was one of the guests of honour for local cricket club Colchester Cavaliers at the weekend.

The Cavaliers have spent several months raising funds for a much needed new pavilion building near to their playing fields on Mill Road, near to the U's Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Former Zimbabwe international cricket star Henry Olonga joined Eddie on Sunday afternoon in declaring the new pavilion open, before Henry entertained the attending crowd with reminisces about his sporting and political past.

The night raised further funds for the PDQ League Two side, which will help complete the pavilion (installing decking, completing the interior) as well as starting on other new projects (like youth development).

The whole day proved to be a hugely successful exercise for the Cavaliers who celebrated the opening of their new pavilion by winning their top of the table clash against Purleigh.

Cheered on from the sidelines by Eddie, they defeated Purleigh by seven wickets, despite playing the whole match with just ten men and, in doing so, remained the unbeaten league leaders.
