U's boss Paul Lambert has moved to praise chairman Robbie Cowling, as the duo work together to boost the squad ahead of next year's promotion push.

Paul and Robbie have enjoyed a positive relationship since the Scotsman joined the club in October of last year and the former Celtic midfielder believes things are moving in the right direction.

He told the Colchester Gazette: "Robbie has really been first class.

"He's been terrific - it's unbelievable what he has done for this football club. I heard someone describe him as the League One equivalent of Steve Gibson.

"I don't think that's too far off the mark. I've asked him for the players that I want in and we're trying our best to try and get them."
