Hornby initially joined the U's on loan for the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, before making the permanent switch in the summer of 2022.
Sam's initial loan spell yielded a total of eight appearances as he battled with Shamal George for the starting spot at the JobServe Community Stadium. Putting in some impressive performances including a Team of the Week appearance for his saves against Hartlepool United on the final day of the season, Hornby was always on the radar for a return to North Essex.
And the 'keeper rejoined the club on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee in June 2022 from Bradford City.
The 6ft 3 'keeper gained plenty of experience with other Football League teams such as Burton Albion, Port Vale and Bradford City, playing against the U's for the Bantams during the 2021/22 season at Valley Parade.
