Rooney Called Up For Yeovil Game

Young defender makes the step up

16 March 2018

January signing Paul Rooney has been rewarded for his recent peformances in the U's U23s with a call-up to the first team squad for the weekend game against Yeovil Town.

Paul joins the U's other centre halves in the squad for Saturday's home game, and has been allocated squad number 46 for the remainder of the season.

The U's will wait on the fitness of Ryan Jackson after the right back came off with an ankle injury against Mansfield last week, but otherwise the squad is in good shape as they prepare for the visit of the Glovers.

Darren Way's side have moved nine points clear of trouble in recent weeks and will be aiming to finish the season on a high in the last ten matches.

Tickets are currently available at the Advance rate and are available at that price until 2.00pm.

Yeovil Send U's To Defeat

One goal enough in latest home game

17 March 2018

Colchester United fell to a disappointing home defeat on Saturday, as Yeovil ran out 1-0 winners on a bitterly cold afternoon at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The U's had started the game the brighter and had had much the better of the first half but found themselves behind at the break after a missed Sammie Szmodics' penalty and Alex Fisher's low strike for the visitors.

The home side were unable to build up a head of steam in the second half and, with Yeovil happy to hit on the counter, the Glovers took all three points.

The game could have been different had the early penalty been converted but, after Kane Vincent-Young was felled, Szmodics' spot kick wasa saved by Stuart Nelson.

The former Brentford keeper had always put in good performances against the U's in his career and he pulled off two or three good saves in this one too.

Driven on by the excellent Tom Lapslie, the U's were adapting to the torrid conditions better than their opponents, with Szmodics firing inches wide after a sharp turn on the edge of the box.

But Yeovil took the lead midway through the first half, as a long throw in the box was set up for Fisher, who slotted the ball away nicely past Walker.

Five minutes later, Wright sent in a bending shot that Sowumni headed away.

And just before half time, Szmodics, Wright and Mandeville combined well to set up Guthrie, but his shot was blocked behind for a corner.

After the interval, where the U's introduced Courtney Senior, the visitors started the brighter.

Browne sent over a low cross that eluded five people in the six yard box before being hooked away from danger.

The U's had a couple of dangerous free kicks that Nelson repelled - a cracking stop from Mandeville, before then also tipping over Shodipo's effort.

Kent had a header pushed wide, and the U's had a host of corners in the dying stages, but Nelson and his defenders stood strong to take the win and condemn the U's to defeat.
