U's Win At Stevenage

Mandron strike enough for three points at the Lamex Stadium

24 March 2018

Colchester United have beaten Stevenage, thanks to Mikael Mandron's sweeping finish.

Mandron finished off a great move to open the scoring in the first half, and the U's could have been more than one up at the break.

Whilst there weren't the same number of chances in the second period for the U's, the home side were policed very well at the other end and it was a deserved win.

It was the U’s that started the game on the front foot, with Sammie Szmodics almost opening the scoring within the first ninety seconds.

His initial effort was blocked on the edge of the box, but he was first to the rebound and drilled it narrowly past the post.

On eight minutes, Szmodics turned provider, crossing low for Mandron, but the chance went begging as the U’s striker failed to make good contact.

He made amends just past the halfway stage of the first period, finishing a great U’s move.

Tom Eastman and Ryan Jackson were involved on the right before the ball entered the Stevenage half, then Drey Wright found Kane Vincent-Young on the left wing.

He beat the Stevenage right back Ronnie Henry and crossed low for Mandron to sweep his left foot shot past King in the home goal.

He then hooked a shot wide at the near post from another left wing move, as the U’s continued to dominate.

The hosts did have a couple of half chances, which didn’t evert threaten Sam Walker’s goal, but they were on the back foot again towards the end of the half.

Szmodics drilled an effort inches past the post, with the suspicion of a fingertip save that the referee didn’t give, and Mandron had a header saved in the last few minutes.

After that first half that the U’s dominated, it was expected that Stevenage would endeavour to really take the game to the visitors.

That wasn’t the case in the early stages though, with Drey Wright failing to connect as a corner was cleared to him on  the edge of the area.

Alex Revell had a rare chance for the U’s after fifty minutes but his angled volley went safely over the crossbar.

At the other end, Szmodics hit his effort straight at King seconds later, and Ryan Jackson followed suit on the hour.

Walker had been a virtual spectator and didn’t have to work hard to comfortably take a Newton header on seventy three minutes.

The action returned to the Stevenage half two minutes later, with Szmodics again in the thick of things – volleying over when a corner fell to him fifteen yards out.

It was a much quieter half in terms of goalscoring chances, and the defensive display by Prosser, Eastman and the rest ensured that another clean sheet was achieved.
