Young fan meets U's duo - and wins a prize!
Josh, who is only nine years old but has been a keen U’s fan for most of his life, heard that two star Colchester United players were going to be at Ashleys on Saturday, so he just had to be there.
When Karen Borley took her children Jodie and Josh to kitchen and bathroom retailer Ashleys of Frinton, in the Triangle shopping centre, home improvement wasn’t top of her list.
Both Josh and his ten-year old sister Jodie were only two of many who came to Ashleys on Saturday morning to meet the players and enter the draw, but it was Jodie whose name was pulled out of the hat.
It had been signed by the whole team and Ashleys were running a free draw to win it.
Tom Eastman, last season’s Young Player of the Year and fellow central defender Matt Heath had brought with them the shirt Matt wore during their friendly against West Ham recently.
The club were delighted to hear that Josh has made a full recovery.
While he was seriously ill in Colchester General Hospital some of the team, including Teddy Sheringham, paid a visit to his ward to cheer him up, as they do with all the sick children there.
It was the U’s who supported Josh when he was four years old and diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer, Burkett’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Was Jodie delighted to win the shirt? Over the moon, because she’s going to give it to her brother, one of the U’s staunchest supporters.
Jodie and Josh will be at Ashleys on Saturday to collect their shirt, and Josh says it will take pride of place on his bedroom wall.
