Charlton Provide Tough Test

16 July 2012

Youth team fully tested by Addicks.

The U's youth team have continued their pre-season preparations with a trip to Charlton Athletic.

It was the second competitive match Tony Humes' squad have played, following their game against Shenfield High School previously.

And Humes was pleased with how the youngsters performed, despite being defeated 3-0 by the Londoners.

"It was another great work out for us and there were a lot of positives to take into future games."

"We kept possession well and used the width of the pitch well, aspects that we have worked on in the early part of our training."

The possession wasn't rewarded for the U18s, with Charlton's defence able to keep a clean sheet.

It wasn't the same story at the other end, with Humes highlighting the big difference between the teams on the day.

"We competed with them and matched them in everything except individual concentration at the back and clinical finishing."

"They punished us for the individual mistakes we made defending, although generally we defended well, scoring three times from their limited chances."

There was praise for his youngsters, with Humes saying: "Overall, the result didn't really reflect the level of performance, and although everyone played their part in full, Billy Roast, Gus Mafuta, Tom Lapslie and Frankie Kent can be very pleased with their contribution."
