In a similar situation at the other end, the U’s marshalled two Shrewsbury forwards excellently to quell what looked like a dangerous attack, eventually forcing the ball out of play.
The home side had recovered well from going behind, though, moving the ball around nicely and trying to test their opposition, who kept their defensive shape well.
They were giving the U’s plenty to think about, though, with captain Rose getting some timely interceptions in for the visitors.
The U’s were next to attempt to score, though, with a shot from Duguid and a follow-up from Eastmond both blocked by resolute home defending.
Taylor was the man making things happen for Salop and he cut in off the right wing and drifted across the edge of the box before curling a shot only inches wide.
The home side were growing into the match and that man Taylor sent over another dangerous cross that dropped to Helan, but he lifted his effort well over the bar.
Having ridden some Shrewsbury pressure, the U’s then had a chance of their own, as Wilson stepped out of defence and curled an effort just over the bar.
Eastmond then broke out of his role in midfield to venture towards the Shrewsbury box and evaded a couple of tackles as he got into the box. He opted not to shoot and eventually ran out of space.
The U’s went in ahead at the break but Jacobson’s swift one two with Proctor saw him get in on goal, but Cousins stood strong to see it away.
The visitors went down the other end and a good combination between Wilson and Henderson saw the latter step across the defence and curl one just wide of goal.
The home side had come out all guns blazing though and they hit the U’s on the counter ten minutes into the second half, and the dangerous Taylor made the most of some space to curl the ball agonisingly wide.
The game was an open one and, after Eastmond had scuffed his initial shot, Wilson snapped up the rebound to force a good stop out of Weale.

And the substitution paid instant dividends as the U’s doubled their advantage three minutes after his introduction.
The Shrews were on the attack, but Henderson snaffled up a loose ball and sent Watt away down the right.

Duguid then made the most of some good work by Ibehre as he curled one inches wide of the far post as the U’s sought a game clinching goal.
