Jabo Is Your Top Man

Striker lands main accolade at awards dinner.

Powerful striker Jabo Ibehre was the man given the honour of the Official Colchester United Player of the Year at the club's End of Season Awards Dinner on Tuesday night.

In a season typified by a united team effort that pulled the U's clear of trouble at the foot of the table, Jabo's efforts in leading the line under the management of Joe Dunne were acknowledged by the club's supporters in this year's vote.

Jabo saw off the challenge of goalkeeper Sam Walker and defender Magnus Okuonghae to land this year's top award.

It made it a quartet of awards for the former MK Dons man, who had already been given the two CUSA awards from their members, as well as the vote from the Hospital Radio Colchester team.

It was an 18th birthday to remember for winger Drey Wright, who celebrated his big day by storming to victory in the Young Player of the Year crown, ahead of Sam Walker and Gavin Massey.

Massey picked up the award that all players like to receive, as his efforts down the wings this season saw him pick up the Players' Player of the Year award.

Matt Heath's unstinting efforts saw him given the Community Player of the Year trophy, with the big centre half a superb advocate for the club over the past year.

And now plying his trade at Rochdale, Michael Rose's thunderbolt against Portsmouth was given the Goal of the Season award, although he was run close by Billy Clifford's first career goal with a thumping finish against Yeovil.

We'll have more reaction to the awards on Wednesday.
