U's Win Derby Clash

20 January 2014

U17s defeat Ipswich counterparts.

Colchester went with a squad comprising first year scholars, U16s already offered apprenticeships and two U15s players who are progressing well this season.

The two sides agreed to field an U17s side, allowing the next batch of young players to have the chance to impress.

With both teams' U18s fixtures falling foul to the recent weather, the U's were invited by Town to take part in an U17s friendly on a 4g astroturf surface at a school in Ipswich.

Colchester United's youth team saw off their Ipswich Town counterparts by a 3-1 scoreline on Saturday afternoon.

U's Academy Manager Tony Humes told the official website: "The game was, as usual, a competitive affair, with both sides trying to get one over each other in a local derby.

"The game settled and we took advantage of good wide play to score twice in the first half through an own goal and a header from full back Cameron James following good play from Tyler Brampton on the right wing.

"We continued to take the game to Ipswich at scored a third early in the second half through a 20 yard strike by Wayne Blackman.

"The game evened out as substitutes were made and Ipswich got a goal back mid way in the second half, with a final score of 3–1.

"It was a good performance and good for the boys to be playing after the Christmas break and the recent wet weather postponements."
