U's Continue Progress

17 July 2014

Four more goals for Joe's boys.

A fine passing saw the ball worked across the area and, given space by his man, the winger bent one in the top corner beyond Archer.

Like in the Heybridge game, the second goal was quick in coming and it was Wright who doubled the advantage.

A Drey Wright cross from the right was handled in the box and Freddie Sears made no mistake as he sent the keeper the wrong way to get things underway.

The opener came from the penalty spot, with the U's scoring from a spot kick for the second time so far in pre-season.

They had to wait until after the half hour mark to break the deadlock in this one and were often thwarted by the impressive Alex Archer in the Sudbury goal.

Like the other two friendlies, the goals were evenly spread amongst the players and the two elevens, in what was the U's most competitive game out of the trio of matches so far.

Colchester United remained on the goal trail on Thursday night as they recorded a 4-1 win over AFC Sudbury to make it three wins out of three.

Two up at the break, there was again a complete change of eleven for the second half.

And the second half eleven saw the opposition score first after the restart as a corner into the box eluded Walker and Hughes was on hand at the far post to nod home from close range.

However, any thoughts of a Sudbury fightback were dealt a blow shortly afterwards.

Archer had repelled two shots in quick succession from Szmodics and Holman, but the duo were both involved in the move to make it 3-1.

Holman laid it out wide to Massey, whose low cross was turned home by Szmodics for his first of pre-season.

Gilbey, who saw plenty of the ball in midfield, cannoned one off the base of the post from distance ten minutes later, before the U's got a fourth with just over fifteen minutes remaining.

A defensive mistake saw the prowling Holman capitalise, this time scoring with his left foot with a tidy finish after a right footed effort against Brantham five days before.
First Half XI: Lewington, Olufemi, Okuonghae, Eastman, Gordon, Eastmond, David Wright, Drey Wright, Sears, Vose, Ibehre

That makes it sixteen goals in pre-season for the U's so far. Leiston await on Saturday, before the U's venture a set of friendlies against league opposition.

Second Half XI: Walker, Clohessy, Thompson, Kent, O'Donoghue, Gilbey, Moncur, Watt (Eastmond), Szmodics, Massey, Holman
