Ex U's defender Brian Wood passes away

Former U's star Brian Wood has sadly passed away.

Brian died on Saturday at the age of 73, after several years at a Suffolk care home suffering from Dementia and Parkinson’ Disease.

The U's centre-half made over 70 Colchester United appearances, scoring two goals, and also played for West Bromwich Albion, Crystal Palace, Leyton Orient and Workington.

Later he became a part-time scout for Preston, a job he combined with managing the Willis Faber and Dumas sports club in Ipswich.

Steve Foley, former U's player, coach and caretaker manager, was an apprentice at Layer Road when Wood was a senior player.

Foley, who went on to play over 300 games for the U’s, used to visit his old club-mate in the nursing home at Saxted and The thoughts of everyone at Colchester United are with Brian's family and friends at this sad time.

said: “I used to clean Woody’s boots as a bright eyed Layer Road junior, and was proud to do so. He always had time to help me. He was an excellent player and so popular with everyone.”
