And he believes the fans can really play their part in the first derby match in five years.

A full house for the Essex derby is a tantalising prospect for the new manager as he takes charge of the U's for the first time.

Colchester United boss Kevin Keen is urging the club's supporters to 'give it a real go' when Southend United come to town on Saturday.


"Whether we go in front or go behind, we will need them to stick with us and have a real go in supporting the team.

"They can be massive for us," he told the official website. "We're in a position where we don't want to be in the league, so it's a time where the true supporters come through and I am absolutely sure that they will do at the weekend."

"I was at Roots Hall the other night and their fans played a big part in the game, so I would want our fans to do the same on Saturday.

There are only very limited tickets remaining for the match and it is expected to sell out on Thursday ahead of the weekend match.
