We take a look at the midfielder's performance against West Ham.

In our latest Player Watch feature, Ashley Randall takes a look at Alex Gilbey's performance.

Colchester United kept their pre-season ticking over on Tuesday night, with a useful 1-0 win over a young West Ham side.

Just before half time Colchester United received another free kick. It was passed to Alex who was standing outside the box, but his shot went wide as there was too much spin on the ball, and the first half ended 1-0.

He was shoulder to shoulder with the West Ham defend and he managed to pass the right back, but the defender slid in from behind and tackled Alex to stop his run towards the goal, Colchester were awarded a free kick just outside the box.

Later on in the first half, the home grown product picked up the ball on the left wing and sprinted down towards the opposition's goal.

Alex found himself in the box half way through the first half and headed the ball towards goal, but he didn't make enough contact and the ball went out of play.

Early on in the first half, Alex played a perfectly timed through ball to Drey Wright on the left wing. A few minutes after he switched play with a pin point lob ball out to the right wing, as he showed his wide range of passing.
The action finished there with a well deserved victory to Colchester and the man of the match was awarded to home side's number four Joe Edwards.

Late on in the second half Gilbey dinked the ball in a threatening position in the box, it found the head of Sammie Szmodics, Sammie made great contact with the header but the ball clipped the outside edge of the far right post.

In the second half, Alex continued to attack as he picked up a through ball in the box from George Moncur, he sprinted on the left side of the goal and took the shot which was blocked by the visitors.
