Vital victory wins Performance of the Week.

This award was recognition for their excellent 1 - 0 victory against high-flying Preston North End in Sky Bet League One on Sunday 3 May 2015.

The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week the LG Performance of the Week Award should go to Colchester United.

As well as securing League One football, the win against Preston North End earned the U's the Performance of the Week award.

The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.

U's manager Tony Humes has receive a specially commissioned trophy made by world renowned silversmiths and LMA Partner, Thomas Lyte of London, in a presentation to commemorate the award.

Simon Grayson took his Preston team to Colchester knowing that a win would guarantee automatic promotion to the Championship. But the last fixture of the season was even more important to The U’s for whom nothing short of victory was likely to secure League One survival.

North End’s 18 match unbeaten run came to an end against a Colchester side that stayed up at the expense of Crawley Town, Notts County and Leyton Orient on a dramatic final day.

After the game a delighted Tony Humes said: “Credit to the players, they were brilliant against a really good team and it’s amazing.  We just kept going and going, stuck to what we believed in and ultimately got the reward.

“We didn’t get any notice of what was going on elsewhere until we scored and the players will only grow from this.”
