U's Receive Donation

6 October 2015

Club given two wheelchairs by local charity.

Colchester United have teamed up with a local charity to help bolster their provision for those with additional needs at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

After winning the Family Club of the Year award at the Football League awards, the club have now turned their attention on supporters who may have additional needs or disabilities.

The U's have now paired up with the 'Short Term Wheelchair Loan Charity', based at Essex County Hospital, to make use of two of their wheelchairs around the stadium – both on matchdays and during the course of the week.

The wheelchairs will be able to be used for those supporters with mobility issues to move around the stadium more easily, and also be available for any injuries to the playing squad.

U's Stadium Operations Manager Sean McQuaid said: "We are very grateful for this very kind donation from the charity.

"The stadium is well equipped for those fans with additional needs, but this gives us another service we can provide to people upon their visit and the wheelchairs will come in very useful for us.

"Our thanks go to Bart and his team."

The Short Term Wheelchair Loan charity was set up to help local people needing temporary use of a wheelchair.

They can be used at any age and for many different reasons, including leg fractures, ankle sprains or anyone with temporary restricted mobility.

Bart Walsh from the charity said: "Since five of us established the charity, we have assisted over three thousand local people by offering wheelchairs for free short term loan.

"The NHS only provides wheelchairs for those with long-term conditions which necessitate permanently needing to use a wheelchair indoors and outside.

"The Wheelchair Loan Charity solves the problem when a wheelchair is only required for emergency or short term use."

Bart added that anyone with a couple of hours to spare would be most welcome to join a very friendly team of volunteers.
