Late Flurry Defeats U's

28 September 2015

Coventry win as O'Donoghue returns to action.

A late flurry of goals saw Colchester United's U21s fall to only their second defeat of the season on Monday afternoon, as Coventry City ran out 4-1 winners.

The match had been a closely contested affair, with much of the game played out with the home side a single goal ahead after Ruben Lameiras' first half strike.

The U's, missing a couple of their more senior players with Tosin Olufemi and Jamie Harney on first team duty, continued to contest the game, before falling two behind shortly after Charlie Edge's free kick had caused problems in the City defence.

Devon Kelly-Evans was the provider as George Thomas doubled the home side's lead with twenty minutes to go.

The U's kept probing and gave themselves hope as Joe Tennent showed his aerial power by nodding home a corner with just under ten minutes to go.

But, as the U's sought an equaliser to preserve their unbeaten run, they were hit with a late double whammy from the Sky Blues.

Lateef Elford-Alliyu calmly put home a third for the home side after being set up by goalscorer Thomas before, in the final minute of the game, Kelly-Evans got a goal of his own after finding space on the City left.

The match had one major positive for the U's, though as Michael O'Donoghue got twenty-five minutes under his belt in his first game since December last year.

U's: Barnes, Andrews, Tennent, James, Wilson, Regis (Harrison 77), Lawrence (McKeown 65), Lapslie, Curtis, Edge (O'Donoghue 65), Wright
