U23s Defeat The Addicks

29 August 2016

Sheriff and Regis grab the goals.

Colchester United U23s kept up their unbeaten record at the start of the new season, with a win against Charlton Athletic.

The Addicks have set the standard at this level over the past couple of seasons, but the U's ran out 2-0 winners on this occasion with goals from Decarrey Sheriff and Chris Regis.

The first half was shy of clear cut chances, but new boy Brendan Ocran forced a good save out of Mitov after just five minutes.

Triallist Jamar Loza forced an even better stop out of the Charlton keeper at close range midway through the half, whilst Ocran stopped Kennedy from scoring at the end of the first forty-five minutes.

Loza beat his man ten minutes into the second half but shot straight at Mitov, before two minutes later, Carter struck a shot from the edge of the box at the other end that went just wide.

Just after the hour mark, the U's got ahead as their pressure told with a header from Decarrey Sheriff from a corner beat Mitov.

Cameron James made a couple of timely interventions in the second half to stop the Addicks drawing level and the visitors had a good spell after the U's first goal as they sought the equaliser.

But with eight minutes to go, Regis made the game safe with a thunderbolt of a shot.

He moved forward from midfield and, as it opened up before him, he rocketed one into the top corner past the desparing dive of Mitov.

Charley Edge nearly added a third late on in the game, but it was an impressive win for Wayne Brown's men.

U's: Barnes, Ocran, James, Peter (Pollard 60), Wyatt, Diaz Wright (Harrison 51), Regis, Edge, Sheriff, Brown, Loza (Akinwande 60)
