Running For Alfie

2 February 2016

U's fan prepares for lengthy run before derby clash.

Tom, who ran the equivalent of a marathon around the Weston Homes Community Stadium back at the Blackpool home game in August, will run the 39 miles between the two stadiums ahead of the second Essex derby of the season.

The two teams go head to head on the pitch at Roots Hall, but supporters will do their bit to back U's fan Tom Leggett at the weekend fixture.

Fans of Colchester United and Southend United will put Essex rivalries to one side on Saturday to help raise money for a very worthy cause. "Before I arrive at the ground I am planning to stop in at the Blue Boar in Southend for a quick pint with my fellow Colchester United supporters, many of whom have donated to Alfie's cause, and then on to the ground hopefully by about 2pm!

"I am planning to leave the Weston Homes Community Stadium at about 4am and will aim to take a break every 5 miles.

Tom told the U's website: "I am planning on running from the Weston Homes Community Stadium to Roots Hall, all 39.4 miles of it, hopefully in time to do a lap of the pitch then take up my seat to enjoy the game!

"Alfie was born with an incredibly rare condition called Norrie disease, for which there is no cure, and has left him blind from birth, and has a high chance of issues in later life including deafness, developmental delays and autism.

"My main aim is to raise awareness for Alfie's cause and also raise funds for him, as we still have many obstacles and challenges to come, and there is a high possibility that although he has already had one operation in America he will need further surgeries over there which come at quite a high price!

"Once again thank you all so much, your support is something that my family and I will never forget, Alfie is developing well, and much of that is down to your help!"

To help contribute funds to Tom and Alfie's cause, two pubs in Southend have joined forces with the two clubs' supporters.

Away pub The Blue Boar will be auctioning off a signed U's ball and a signed U's shirt to visiting fans, whilst The Spread Eagle, a regular haunt for Southend fans before a game, will be auctioning off a signed Southend shirt.

Both clubs wish Tom all the best on his big run this weekend and we look forward to seeing him at the game on Saturday.
