Bowers beaten in quarter final clash.
Colchester United earned safe passage to the semi-finals in the Essex Senior Cup on Monday night, winning 3-1 against Bowers & Pitsea.
They scored twice in the first quarter of the game and looked set to score more, but their non-league opponents pushed them all the way in the second half as they continued their own impressive season.
But the U's youngsters made it three wins out of three in 2016, thanks to goals from Dion Sembie-Ferris and two from Drey Wright.
The U's first goal came on eighteen minutes, as the ball found its way to Sembie-Ferris on the edge of the box and he calmly slotted into the upper reaches of the net to give the U's the lead.
Five minutes later, it was two, as Wright peeled into the left hand channel and slotted the ball under the goalkeeper to double the U's lead.
When the U's were given a penalty on 27 minutes for handball, it looked like they might extend their advantage, but Sembie-Ferris crashed a shot against the bar.
The visitors first chance came five minutes before half time as Trenkel headed just past the far post.
But the U's retained their two goal advantage into the break, before extending it on the hour mark.
Wright found some space on the edge of the box, and curled home a low effort just inside the right hand post to make it 3-0.
But, from there, it was Bowers who had the stronger finish.
After hitting the post through Manor, they pulled one back on 68 minutes as Hilton's cross was smashed home by Bryan.
They had another opportunity as it fell to Manor six yards out, but he scuffed his first shot before firing wide.
As the game entered its final five minutes, Bonne outmuscled three before forcing a good save out of Goodwin-Green, then Barnes made an even better stop at the other end.
That gave the U's some breathing space into the dying moments of the game and they ran out 3-1 victors.
