Player Watch: Jake Kean

11 January 2016

We take a look at the goalie's first U's appearance.

Kieran Baldwin was on hand to take a look at the performance of the U's new goalkeeper, Jake Kean.

Colchester United ran out 2-1 winners on Saturday to provide an FA cup upset against a troubled Charlton Athletic side.

It was a chance for U's fans to see their new loan signing Jake Kean in action for the first team, after he swapped Norfolk for Essex earlier in the week.

In truth, Colchester's dominance throughout the game meant it was a quiet day for the 24-year-old keeper, but when he was called into action he looked both confident and comfortable in dealing with Charlton chances.

8 minutes: Kean looking confident at the back, no shots to deal with as yet but his kicking is very assured.

17 minutes: Charlton have their first real chance of the game and Kean has to be on full stretch to see the ball go just wide.

28 minutes: GOAL! Colchester take the lead as George Moncur scores after being played through by Marvin Sordell.

30 minutes: Kean is quickly out to a cross and gets a good solid punch on it, still no real save to make, although the follow-up hits the post.

37 minutes: Kean shows a good aerial presence to come claim a cross.

41 minutes: GOAL! Colchester double the lead after Moncur and Sordell swap roles. Sordell makes it 2-0 to the U's.

45 minutes: Kean finally has a shot to deal with, and impressively parries a shot away to his right hand side.

SECOND HALF: Colchester 2-0 Charlton

52 minutes: Kean catches a cross with ease, the big keeper looks confident claiming crosses.

68 minutes: Kean has to be alert to tip the ball wide after a shot is deflected dangerously in the area. He is fouled in the process.

76 minutes: Kean does well to relieve some pressure on the Colchester defence, claiming yet another cross.

82 minutes: Kean remains big in the U's goal to react late to a shot from the edge of the box. The save almost results in a Colchester goal at the other end but the chance comes and goes as Bonne lobs wide!

86 minutes: Kean gets his body in the way yet again at the back post as he saves a powerful header from Simon Makienok. The striker is punished for a foul but Kean wasn't to know.

90 minutes: GOAL! Charlton pull a goal back and prevent Kean claiming a clean sheet on his debut. Reza Ghoochannejhad climes highest to head the ball past the U's debutant.

FULL TIME: Colchester United 2-1 Charlton Athletic

Overview
It was a quiet day for the U's new stopper and he will have busier days but he looked impressive when dealing with crosses and made several good stops. Both Kean and the Colchester defence were cruelly denied a clean sheet but they looked far more organised at the back.

The U's fans will now look forward to the Fourth Round draw in the hope of a big tie against a Premier League side.
