U's Beat Hatters

19 July 2016

U21s see off Luton in friendly.

The U's U21s have beaten Luton Town at Florence Park on Tuesday afternoon.

On a blisteringly hot day, goals from Decarrey Sheriff and Charley Edge were enough to seal a 2-1 victory over the Hatters.

The game started with the U's having the better of possession and the better of the early chances.

Sheriff had a shot saved on twelve minutes, before Diaz Wright blazed his effort high over the bar from a short corner routine.

A strong run from Sheriff forced a Luton defender to hurriedly clear for a corner and the U's were denied straight after when Louis Dunne's low cross was blocked.

Luton did get a couple of sights at goal in a rare break, the first of which was deflected for a corner and the second was wide from the resultant set piece.

They then went close as a free kick was curled against the top of the bar, but it did look as though Dillon Barnes had it covered.

Five minutes before the break, the U’s got the opener, when Sheriff was on hand to head home after Jack Curtis' shot had rebounded off the bar.

The 1-0 half time score line was probably more flattering to Luton than the U's – the gap really should have been wider.

The second half started in the same vein, with the U's clocking up six shots at goal in the first twelve minutes of the half.

Not one tested the visiting keeper though, and the hour mark signalled wholesale changes for the U's.

Nine substitutes took their place for the remaining half hour but less than sixty seconds later, the Hatters drew level.

Possession was lost cheaply just inside the U's half and when the ball fell to the Luton striker, he moved it onto his left foot and shot low into the bottom corner.

A wide free kick from the U's almost caught the Luton keeper out but he managed to scramble across to his near post to save.

Luton sensed that they might be able to get a win themselves at this stage and a far post header should have been better but flew well wide of the target.

With eight minutes to go, the U's restored their lead when Charley Edge struck with a sweet left foot shot.

Callum Jones provided the pass out to the left, Edge's first touch was perfectly cushioned, allowing him to drill the shot across the keeper and inside the far post.

A minute later, a determined run from George Brown saw him escape the attentions of the Luton defence but he was denied by a good save.

That was the final action of the game, with the U's deservedly coming through as winners in the difficult conditions.
