New Roles For Coaches

Academy structure for 2016/17 confirmed.

Colchester United have appointed a number of coaching staff to new positions ahead of the 2016/17 season.

With John McGreal promoted to be First Team Coach in charge of the senior side for next season, there have been a number of moves elsewhere within the Academy.

U21s Team
Former U's defender Wayne Brown will step up from the U18s to take charge of the U21s as Lead Coach next season. Wayne had supported John in the latter part of last season and will now manage the U's development side.

Wayne will be assisted by Kevin Horlock. 

The former Manchester City midfielder has been coaching in the U's Academy with the U18s for several months now and will join Wayne in the U21s set-up next season.

In 2015/16, Kevin had a spell as manager of Ryman Division One South side, Chatham Town. He has also been involved with Needham Market Reserves and their Academy, along with the Northern Ireland U21s.

As a player, Kevin appeared for several professional football clubs, including Manchester City from 1997 until 2003, appearing 206 times and scoring 39 goals in the process. His other clubs include Swindon Town, West Ham United, Ipswich Town, Doncaster Rovers, Scunthorpe United and Mansfield Town. Horlock also appeared for his National team, Northern Ireland on 32 occasions.

As part of his role with Colchester United, Kevin will also be in charge of Maldon & Tiptree next season, as they mount an assault on promotion in the Ryman League Division One North.

U18s Team
David Wright will take charge of the U18s next season as U18s Lead Coach. Having originally arrived as a player, David has held a number of positions within the club and will use his experience with the young U's in 2016/17.

David will be assisted by Liam Bailey, who has experience of the U18s set-up as a player himself ten years ago. 

Other positions that have been confirmed in recent weeks are Adam Lewis as 

Liam has worked with David in their stint at Maldon & Tiptree and has also worked with the younger U's age groups before now stepping up to spend time with the U18s. Lead Phase Coach and James McFarlane as 
Lead Youth Phase Coach.
