U's Roar To Victory

26 November 2016

Four goals to complete positive week.

From the first whistle, the U's were on the front foot as they continued where they left off on Tuesday to make it six points, seven goals and two clean sheets in a productive week.

Colchester United's best display of the season saw them put four without reply past Crewe, as they made it back to back wins to finish November on a high. A first half header from Kurtis Guthrie separated the sides at the break as Colchester dominated long spells without being able to find a second.

In the second half, Colchester stamped their authority on the game as goals from Owen Garvan, a deflected Drey Wright effort and Brennan Dickenson made it 4-0 and secured the three points.

It was a slow start to the half for both sides in terms of chances but Colchester seemed to have a new confidence about them following their 3-0 away win against Cheltenham in midweek.

Owen Garvan made his second consecutive start following his return from injury and most of the play was going through him.

Colchester were rewarded for their good start in the 20th minute when Kurtis Guthrie produced a superb flicked header across goal and into the far corner from a Garvan corner.

The U's then tried to push on from the opening goal and should have had a second four minutes later, however Denny Johnstone could only header the ball into the ground and saw Garratt claw it away, as Garvan picked him out with a deep cross.

This missed chance only seem to push Colchester on further and on 31 minutes, Richard Brindley must have been wondering how he didn’t double the lead as his powerful header from five yards out was saved spectacularly by Ben Garrett in the Crewe goal.

From the resulting corner, Brennan Dickenson got his head to the cross ahead of Garrett but his header dropped just wide. Denny Johnstone also had a chance from another corner but Garrett was equal to the header.

Crewe began the second half on the front foot as they looked to get back into the game, they had several chances in a 15 minute spell but were unable to convert. Firstly Alex Kiwomya had a shot from the angle saved from Sam Walker after being played in by George Cooper.

This was shortly followed by a chance for Crewe striker Chris Dagnall but his volley from the edge of the box was blocked by U's defender Frankie Kent and went wide.

From there on in it was all about Colchester as they finally managed to double their advantage, Garvan managed to win back possession inside the Crewe half and the visitors were caught short at the back, the experienced midfielder advanced forward with the ball before calmly slotting the ball low into the net to give Colchester a 2-0 lead.

The U's didn't have to wait too long for a third to follow, Drey Wright's driven cross from the inside the penalty area went in off Ben Nugent to give Colchester a third and wrap up all three points.

From there on in Colchester were well in control and added a fourth in injury time, Dickenson picked up his second in as many games as he produced a stunning shot from 25 yards out to find the bottom corner to make it 4-0.

This result means Colchester are up to 15th and just 4 points off the play-offs following this fantastic performance and result.

The U's now have a week off following their exit from the FA Cup but are back in action on the 10th of December as they travel to face Mansfield Town.
