A Busy Summer

1 September 2016

John and Steve recruit fourteen ahead of window closing.

Wednesday evening saw the August transfer window come to a close with two fresh additions to the Colchester United first team squad.

With the window now shut, EFL clubs are now not able to make any further transfers until the January transfer window opens in four months time.

It has been a busy summer period for John McGreal and Steve Ball, as they have reshaped the U's squad along with bringing in some promising talent for the future to join Wayne Brown's U23s squad.

All told, fourteen players have signed for the U's since the end of last season, with a host of current players also extending their contracts.

With that in mind, you'd be forgiven for forgetting just who has walked through the doors at Florence Park, so here's our summer transfer round-up.

Ben Wyatt (23rd May)
Ben signed for the U's after impressing at nearby Maldon & Tiptree last season. He came with good pedigree, having been with Norwich for eight years and Ipswich for one, prior to his Maldon switch. He has settled into life nicely in the U's U23s.

Luke Prosser (21st June)
John and Steve were keen to add in some experience to the first team squad and Luke was the first of those to add that knowledge of League Two, having twice been promoted from this level. His leadership skills saw him named as U's club captain for the new season.

Denny Johnstone (28th June)
Denny had caught the U's eye during his time in Scotland and, as they looked to bolster their firepower, they snapped him up for an undisclosed fee from Birmingham. He got off the mark with the crucial second goal against Cambridge in our first home game.

Courtney Senior (28th June)
Signed initially to be a part of the U23s squad, Courtney arrived from Brentford. His season was cut cruelly short, however, as he damaged knee ligaments and is now out for the season.

Dexter Peter (29th June)
Central defender Dexter signed for the U's after impressing on trial at the back end of last season. Having captained the U23s in the early games of this campaign, he made his U's first team debut against Crawley in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Brennan Dickenson (29th June)
Brennan was the first of two players to join from Gillingham, and added some all action play down the U's left in the friendly fixtures. He quickly transferred that to the league games and already has three goals to his name.

Doug Loft (1st July)
Two days later, Brennan was joined by Doug, a player with a wealth of experience at this level after spells at Port Vale and Gillingham, to add some real competition for places in the midfield area of the pitch.

Kurtis Guthrie (6th July)
The U's paid money for the second time in the summer as they captured Kurtis from National League side Forest Green Rovers. Able to play out wide or through the middle, Kurtis opened his U's account in the 3-2 home win against Grimsby.

Craig Slater (7th July)
Scottish midfielder Craig followed a day later and adds a mix of grit and flair into the middle of the park for the U's. His move south hasn't dented his international aims either, as he was called up for Scotland U21s at the end of August.

Lewis Kinsella (29th July)
The home pre-season friendlies saw former Aston Villa defender Lewis impress the watching U's supporters. John and Steve obviously agreed, as the marauding left back signed a contract to stay with the Essex side.

Brendan Ocran (13th August)
Following left back Lewis was right back Brendan, who signed after impressing in the U23s pre-season games. The former Barnet man is now settling into life with the U's development squad.

Rhys Williams (29th August)
The U's have been blessed with some excellent young goalkeepers in recent seasons and they added another young shot stopper to the ranks at the end of August, as Rhys signed for the U23s after some solid performances on trial for the U's.

Tarique Fosu (31st August)
As the transfer deadline loomed, John and Steve made two further additions to the first team squad. The first was exciting winger Tarique, who joined until January, aiming to replicate his positive form at this level with Accrington last season.

Glen Kamara (31st August)
Tarique was followed by Glen, who is well versed in Essex football after a stint with Southend. Glen also signed until January as the U's squad looks in great shape going into the next four months in fourth place in the table.
