City Defeat U's U23s

13 February 2017

Kinsella returns to action in cup reverse.

Colchester United U23s fell to their first defeat in the Premier League Cup group stages, as Manchester City ran out 3-0 winners.

The U's had won the first game between the two sides, but City were in front early on in this encounter and were able to protect their advantage for the remainder of the game.

The U's remain top of the group, however, with two games left to secure qualification to the knock out stages.

On a chilly afternoon at the Academy Stadium in Manchester, the hosts took the lead after just eight minutes when a cross was turned into his own net by Brendan Ocran.

A further eight minutes in, a cross into the City area caused bedlam, but home keeper Daniel Grimshaw punched the ball clear to preserve the lead.

And the hosts went two up five minutes before the interval.

The ball found Demeaco Duhaney on the left and his shot looped over Rhys Williams and into the net.

The U's knew the next goal in the game would be vital and pressed early in the second half, only for City to score on the hour mark as Isaac Buckley turned home a free kick to secure the three points.

With two games to go, the U's still have a great chance of qualification, with one win in those two games likely to be enough to make it to the next stage.
