U's Exit Senior Cup

5 January 2017

Briggs returns to action in cup defeat.

Colchester United defender Matt Briggs made a return to action on Wednesday night as the U's took on East Thurrock in the Essex Senior Cup.

The U's left back had been out of action this season after a hip operation, but he returned to the pitch as part of a young U's side that took on the Conference South side in the quarter finals of the county competition.

It was a closely fought encounter throughout the game and the U's luck was not with them in the south of Essex, as they struck the woodwork three times on a chilly evening.

Tariq Issa, Louis Dunne and Femi Akinwande all were unfortunate to not open the scoring and it was the home side who got their noses in front with twelve minutes remaining.

Osifuwa sent over a dangerous cross and it was Higgins who finally broke the deadlock.

As the U's chased a path back into the game, they were undone for a second time with five minutes to go.

An initial shot was blocked, but Clark was on hand to tuck home the loose ball and seal the victory.
